New World Flamenco Festival / Irvine
August 9th - August 18thAugust 9-18, 2002
Irvine Barclay Theatre
4242 Campus Drive in Irvine
The New World Flamenco Festival will present flamenco dance, music and song performed by international stars from Spain and around the globe. The Festival seeks to showcase relevant new work by renowned dance artists and companies and to bring the artistry of the flamenco world's finest present-day exponents to California audiences over a ten-day period of concerts, workshops and lecture/demonstrations. The Festival seeks to be the premiere presenter of contemporary flamenco both in California and in the U.S., providing its audiences an opportunity to experience and view the work of artists rarely seen on stages in the U.S.
Curated and directed by Yaelisa, artistic director of Caminos Flamencos, her vision is to present artists and their work who demonstrate the highest qualities of showmanship, artistic integrity and excellence in their field. Chosen artists may either represent the more traditional folk aspects of flamenco, or embody the elements of present-day flamenco [flamenco nuevo]. In summary, she believes that the Festival represents flamenco for the 21st Century, and as such, seeks to provide audiences with a look into the past, present and the future of the art.

Compania Juana Amaya
Juana Amaya, a gypsy from Moron de la Frontera, is one of the most potent and charismatic dancers in modern-day flamenco. Since she was six years old, she has been revered for her striking ability as a dancer. Discovered early by flamenco legend, Mario Maya, Juana was just 14 when she attained the leading role in his renowned dance spectacles Ay Jundo and El Amargo. For three years she toured the world, leaving an indelible impression wherever she danced, and introducing herself to audiences at such famous venues as Carnegie Hall and the Carre Sylvia Monfort Hall in Paris. After such extensive touring, Juana returned to Madrid and began to teach classes while forming her own dance company, which premiered at the Trianon Theatre in Paris for the Mont De Marsan Festival in 1994. In 1996, she accepted Salvador Tavora’s offer to portray the title role in his acclaimed production of Carmen, and worked in Jose Heredia Maya’s Un gitano de Ley. She has since collaborated with Joaquín Cortés in Pasíon Gitana, and starred with Placido Domingo in the opera El Cid, in 2000. Compelling and energized, Juana Amaya remains one of flamencos greatest forces.

Yaelisa & Caminos Flamencos: Desde Cádiz Pá Acá
Acclaimed by critics and audiences around the world, Yaelisa brings her company of 12 superb Spanish and American artists to the Barclay stage for the premiere of Desde Cádiz Pá Acá. Celebrating the song styles of the Golden Age of flamenco of the 1940s-60s, this piece brings new life to caracoles, caña and romeras, an important part of early flamenco. Revitalized by Yaelisa’s vision, the musical direction of "El Rubio," and interpreted by renowned artists from Spain, these cantes return to the forefront in a vital, fresh way, reflecting the changing face of flamenco.
Yaelisa is an Emmy Award-winning choreographer, and founder and artistic director of the New World Flamenco Festival. Known for her innovative incorporation of other musical and dance elements in her work, Yaelisa brings her unique brand of elegance and passion to her performances.

Compania Flamenca Andres Marin: Más allá del Tiempo
Andrés Marín is renowned for being one of the great innovators of traditional flamenco styles. Born to a father who danced and a mother who sang, Andrés was able to define his artistic expression through dance at an early age. In 1992, two major Spanish and Japanese television channels created a documentary that recognized his unique, powerful, and innovative dance technique. After successfully performing at many events throughout the world, Andrés was the featured soloist in the show Trilogy: Past, Present, and Future, where he represented the future of flamenco dance. This acclaimed work was featured in the Madrid Festival of Dance, Biennial Festival of Seville, and the Flamenco Art Festival in Mont de Marsan. Andrés also directs and choreographs his own company, whose latest work, Más allá del Tiempo (Beyond Time), brings the audience on a journey that uncovers the eclectic blend of traditional and unique elements that make up his exceptional personality. After its debut at the New World Flamenco Festival, the company returns to Sevilla for the Spanish premiere of Más allá del Tiempo. Undoubtedly, Andrés Marín is a talented and genuine artist who symbolizes the powerful energy
