Palmas y Compás: Where is One?
by Gonzalo Grau
3/5/05
10:30AM
Flamenco music is inextricably linked to a 12-count beat that is rooted in place by the grounded clapping or palmas of the members of the troupe or cuadro that are performing. In this workshop we will survey and learn the palmas of a number of substyles and work finding “one” in the complex flamenco count or compass.
Flamenco Cajón Percussion: From Andalucía to Perú and back…
By Gonzalo Grau
3/5/05
1:00PM
Twenty years ago, Paco de Lucía, the genius of the modern flamenco guitar incorporated the cajón for the first time in a flamenco ensemble. Today, the cajón is an integral part of flamenco ensembles and holds together the rhythmic percussion base of many of the flamenco substyles. In this workshop Gonzalo will go over the history of the cajón in both Peru and Spain and demonstrate and teach basic techniques, sounds and a variety of "palos" or flamenco styles.
El Cante: Flamenco Singing Basics
By La Conja from NYC
3/6/05
2:00PM
Flamenco music expresses the deepest emotions, from passionate love to extreme anguish and pain of a race that its government was bent on erasing. For centuries flamenco singers have blended voices of the soul with human vocal cords the result of which is a singing cry that is the hallmark of the flamenco style. In this workshop La Conja will give an introduction to cante in Bulerias and Tangos styles demonstrating differences between styles correlated to specific regions of Spain.
Cuadro : The art of flamenco improv on stage
By La Conja, Gonzalo Grau and Pedro Cortés
3/6/05
4:00PM
The ability to play, dance and sing flamenco was born out of generations of families and clans that preserved their heritage and unity through their music. In this workshop we will explore the art of recognizing riffs and percussive elements as signals to begin a dance intervention or to end a singing section in a performance. The elements of baile, cante and playing will be brought together harmoniously and a troupe’s connection will be demystified.
All courses are 1 hr and 30 min in duration.
$25 each individual class, $90 for the 4 class workshop package
No prior flamenco , singing, percussion or dance experience required.
Open to all who wish to enrich their souls con un poco de soniquete!
