Carmen Reina, a native of Sevilla, has entered the artistic world of Flamenco with only 6 years of age. She studied with such masters like Mancilla, Merche Esmeralda,, Manolo Marin, Jose Galvan and others. At age 14 she starts her dancing career at a tablao in Bilbao, and her exceptjional talent leads to performing at some of the most famous tablaos in Sevilla, Los Gallos, El Palacio Andaluz etc. In 1997 she travels to Tokyo, Japan, for the first time and stars as "Carmen", a Flamenco adaption of "George Bizet's" Opera, partnering "El Torombo" as Don Jose. Since then she has been going back to Japan every year to perform at very prestigious theaters and to teach workshops. In 1999 she tours all over Germany and Belgium with her own Cuadro Flamenco. She also appears with such famous Flamenco artists like "El Lebrijano", "Diego Carrasco", "Juanito de los Reyes", "El Junco" and next year she will tour in Japan with "Juana Amaya" and "El Extremeno". In the present she teaches at various Flamenco studio in Sevilla, dances at tablaos and dance Festivals.

This will be her first time in the United States and we are very honored to receive her in Chicago.

Flamenco Fundamentals: Class for those with no prior flamenco dancing experience. The class will concentrate on the basic techniques and elements in dance: how to move hands and arms, proper placement of the body, turns, basic introductory heelwork. The class will learn movements in small increments, and then implement them into a short dance (palo) to dance at the final activity. Students will learn how all elements are incorporated in to the dance. Class fee: 1 hour-$10. (Minimum of 5 participants due to studio rental fees).

Baile/Dance Level 1-2: Class focuses on the learning needs of individuals at an intermediate (6 months+) to advanced level. Individuals will learn the structure or anatomy of a specific palo in flamenco (i.e. Caracoles, Siguiriyas, Solea, Tientos, Taranto, Farruca, Romeras, Alegrias, Caña, Tangos, Bulerias, etc.) Emphasis is NOT choreography, but how brazeo, taconeo, and steps work within the palo, complimenting the compás/musical message. Individuals will gain a better knowledge of the why of the dance, the message conveyed in its many nuances. Class fee: 1.5 hours- $35. (Minimum of 4 participants due to rental costs/content of course)

Cante Class: For individuals interested in learning how to sing flamenco (specify if for singing for dance/dancers or solo singing). Anyone, at any level may sign up for privates (45 minutes) or small group (1 hour, no more than 3 people). The class will focus only on one specific palo, a letra or letras (verse or verses) will be learned, compás/palmas to accompany the cante will be taught and practiced. Please notify instructor if you wish to incorporate live flamenco guitarist in the classes, arrangements for travel may have to be made depending on local availability (local guitarists have priority). Class fee: Private (1 hour) $30. Small Group (1 hour) $20 per person. Private/Small group class with guitar (1 hour) fee + $25 (guitarist fee).

Compás/Jaleos Class Level 1 only: A fun, interactive class. Compás/Rhythm, Palmas/Clapping, and Jaleos/Shouts, will be taught. Class will begin at the basic level, and build to more complicated levels. Students will learn to improvise palmas/jaleos in a "Juerga" (party) setting, and accenting according to the needs of a dancer. Cassette recorders are welcome and encouraged. Class fee: 1 hour- $10 (Minimum of 5 participants due to studio rental fee).

Juerga/Masters Class For individuals wanting to learn the structure of a particular cante and baile. Individuals will learn a letra (verse) of song, learn how it is sung within the compás of a particular palo, understand how it is sung for dance, learn how to dance to the song (structure/cues), and how to essentially "read" a singer/signal singers/guitarists. Individuals will learn proper entering/exiting within what is being sung, as well as how to improvise in a juerga setting. Fun, active, and engaging class. Students sing in a group "juerga" setting (no solos required, but welcomed when one is comfortable enough!), accompanied by their own palmas, appropriate jaleos, and dances. Song lyrics and simple choreography will be taught, but the spontaneity of each individual as well as their personal style is what is MOST important and cherished. Class fee: 1.5 hours- $40. *Students need not be at a mastery level in order to really take something from this class (Class minimum of 4 students...how can you have a "juerga flamenco" with less???!!!)
